longtown

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 19 cattle, 4,676 prime hoggs and 2,562 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

Clean cattle and bulls were good to sell with buyers’ falling well short of requirements, more cattle needed. Vendors please note commission on prime cattle and bulls will be at a £20 flat rate, please take advantage of the new rate.

OTM Cattle met a much firmer trade, an increase of around 10p on the week, many could have been sold to the vendors’ advantage.

A very good show considering the weather conditions of 4,676 prime hoggs were forward to the usual ring of buyers all keen for sheep again. All classes of hoggs were dearer than expected and well exceeded all other centres this week. A much better show of fed hoggs were presented. The sale averaged 193.5p/kg (SQQ 196.6p). Top price of 261p per kilo for Texels from Oakwood and to £128 per head for Texels from Kirkton.

A similar show of 2,562 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers. Small ewes similar, heavy ewes £5 dearer on the week. Rams remain easy to sell. The sale was topped at £158 for Texel ewes from Four O’ Boot.
