The mixiest show of sheep for quite sometime, a dearer trade not reflected in the averages.

At their weekly primestock sale on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 68 clean cattle, 12 OTM cattle, 50 beef cows, 2,821 old season lambs and 743 ewes.

Bullocks (30) averaged 217.9p per kg and sold to 231p (-7.2p on week), heifers (37) averaged 222.2p per kg and sold to 244p (+5.4p on week), one young bull sold to 222p (n/c on week), 12 OTM Cattle averaged 179.8p and sold to 195p (-1.2p on the week) and 50 beef type cows averaged 127p per kg and sold to 169p (+3.5p on the week).

Old season lambs averaged 191p per kg (+1p on the week) and sold to £113, top price 218p per kg for Beltex. Ewes averaged £94.94, and sold to £159 for Texel. Heavy ewes averaged £100.24 while light ewes sold to £113 for Chev and averaged £61.84.

Longtown

Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 11 prime cattle, two over-30 month cattle, 4,256 prime hoggs and 3,487 cast ewes and rams at the weekly sale last Thursday.

Prime cattle very short of requirements with all classes selling well, more cattle needed on a weekly basis to satisfy demand. Top price of 227.5p twice, first for a Limousin bullock sold by D. and E. Lockhart, Faulding Cleugh, then again for a Limousin heifer shown by W. and W. Faulder, Houghton House. A larger show of 4,256 prime hoggs forward to a full ring of buyers all keen for sheep again. Lightweight hoggs and export weight hoggs remained easily cashed. All other classes sharper on the week. The sale averaged 192p/kg (SQQ 195.5p). Top price of 268p per kilo for Texels from Marygate and to £115 per head for Texels from Huntington.

A larger show of 3,487 cast ewes and rams were forward with the trade for heavy ewes being the dearest seen for many years. More Blackface and Cheviot ewes forward but the sale average was still nearly £100 (£98.90). The sale topped at £182 for a Suffolk ewe from Marygate.
