The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 24 prime cattle, two young bulls, 34 over 30 month cattle, 5,513 prime lambs and 4,688 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

Prime cattle saw some good quality on offer, but a shortage of smaller 500-550 kilo heifers saw trade every bit as dear. Top price to 228.5p for a Limousin heifer shown by J. and N. Blaylock and Son, Hallburn, others to 227.5p from W. and W. Faulder, Houghton House. A plainer show of cast cows forward resulted in averages being slightly down on the week, similar to other centres. Top price to 137.5p for a Galloway from J.B. and T.A. Thompson, Horsegills.

A larger show of 5,513 prime lambs met a fine trade selling to a full ring of 20 active buyers. The sale averaged 168p (SQQ 170.3p). All classes sharper on the week with the best quality lambs realising extreme rates. More export weight lambs required. Heavy lambs also easier to sell. Light weight lambs short of buyers requirements. Another great show of 4,688 cast ewes and rams were forward.
