AT St Boswells Mart on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 80 clean cattle, 24 OTM cattle, 2,572 new season lambs and 771 ewes.

Bullocks (36) averaged 215p per kg and sold to 240p (n/c on week) while heifers (40) averaged 215p per kg and sold to 239p (-9.8p on week). Four young bulls averaged 202p per kg and sold to 222p (+8.1p on week) and 24 beef type OTM cattle averaged 159.1p per kg and sold to 187p (+16p on the week).

The 2,572 new season lambs averaged 178.1p per kg and sold to£102.50(+0.3p on week) and 771 ewes averaged £59.08(-£1.35 on week).

ON Saturday, September 1, John Swan Ltd, Wooler, held their first collective sale proving to be a major success.

On a bright morning a large crowd assembled with buyers from Stirling to Norfolk, all equipment easily sold, a repeat will be held in the near future making this a regular event.

At their weekly Primestock Sale last Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 1,443 lambs and 236 ewes.

Lamb numbers curtailed by brighter harvest conditions, all classes dearer with selling vendors receiving greater returns than early week markets.

LONGTOWN

THE Cumberland AND Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 31 prime cattle, seven young bulls, 39 over 30 month cattle, 5,698 prime lambs and 8,498 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

Prime cattle saw a shortage of numbers, quality saw trade good to sell, and three times as many could have been sold to advantage. Top price to 219.5p (twice) for Limousin bullocks from D. and E. Lockhart, Faulding Cleugh. Limousin heifers sold to 218.5p from Messrs Rutherford, Bleatarn.

Prime bulls were a small show and quality sorts in short supply saw trade top at 206.5p for a British Blue x Friesian from T. and M. Irving, Becton Hall.

The 39 OTM cattle were a larger and better show which saw a top of 176.5p for an Angus cow from Mr I. Nelson, Outertown, Limousins to 172.5p from J. and N. Blaylock and Son, Hallburn.

A larger show of 5,698 prime lambs were a mixed trade this week with a big difference between lambs with flesh and lean lambs, good lambs regularly sold between 180p and 190p but leaner lambs were little more than store price with many more light weight lambs forward. The sale averaged 179.1p per kilo.

Top price of 205p per kilo for Texels from Maidencoates with a top price per head of £100.20 for Texels from Dyke Farm, £98.50 Wood Farm, £97 Carran; Suffolk £93.50 Sceughdyke and Barnglies, £88.50 Clayock, £87.80 Guardsmill; Charollais £92.50 Golden Lane, £90.50 Braithwaite Hall, £84.80 Broomhouse; Beltex £88.80 Wood Farm, £84.80 Sorbie, £83.80 Wood Farm; Greyface £88.50, £76.80 Golden Lane, £76.80 Penpeugh; Dorset £86.80 Golden Lane.

An extraordinary show of 8,498 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers with trade a couple of pounds easier on last week. Good selling Continental ewes remain easily sold and rams constantly short of buyers requirements, realising extreme rates and a many more plainer hill type ewes forward proving harder to cash.

BORDER LIVESTOCK

BORDER Livestock Exchange Ltd last week sold 86 prime cattle including 32 cows, 2,291 prime lambs and 3,015 store and breeding sheep.

Prime cattle were dearer again with numbers tightening. Aberdeen Angus steers from Eastfield of Lempitlaw, Kelso, sold to 390p per kg to Well Hung and Tender, Berwick. Butcher weight Continental cross heifers from Fenwick Steads, Belford, sold to 370p per kg. Other Continental crosses from Cresswell Farms, Belford, to 360p per kg. Holstein young bulls to 325p per kg flat rate.

Lamb trade also firmed with well fleshed lambs in short supply. Suffolk cross and Texel cross medium weights sold to 430p per kg from Raecleugh Head, Duns; Sharplaw, Hownam and Tughall Grange, Chathill. Export weights to 425p per kg and £89.25 from Over Howden, Oxton.

In the store and breeding sheep section the company saw an unprecedented demand selling over 3,000 head. Short keep store lambs looked good value to the buyer while longer keeping lambs were similar to the high prices of last year.
