AT St Boswells Mart on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 91 clean cattle, 33 OTM cattle, 1,614 spring lambs, 207 old season lambs and 281 ewes.

Bullocks (45) averaged 206p per kg (-6.1p on the week). Heifers (39) averaged 205.2p per kg (+0.2p on the week). Seven young bulls averaged 185p per kg (n/c on the week) and 33 beef type OTM cattle averaged 154.9p per kg (+3.1p on the week).

The 1, 614 spring lambs averaged 186.1p per kg (-15.9p on the week) including 843 38-41kgs averaging 187.1p and 281 ewes averaged £87.76 (-£1.63 on the week).

WOOLER

AT their weekly primestock sale held at Wooler last Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 960 lambs, 47 hoggs and young sheep and 88 ewes.

In conjunction with the sale was the Annual Summer Show which was kindly judged by Mr J. Curle who awarded the Championship to Mr J. Scott-Smith, Village Farm, Seahouses, for a pen of Tex.x weighing 40kg and realizing £85 to the judge. Reserve champion went to Messrs J. Fairbairn and Sons, Marshall Meadows, for a pen of Tex.x weighing 41kg making £84.50 to Robert Wilson.

Lambs arriving on the scene in larger numbers nationwide resulting in all classes being harder to sell, although vendors still receiving adequate returns.

THE Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 75 prime cattle, 10 young bulls, 32 over 30 month cattle, 1,695 spring lambs, 567 prime hoggs and 4,097 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

A large show of prime cattle and a good show of quality saw a firm trade throughout. Top price of 225.5p for a Limousin heifer shown by D.J. Garthwaite and Son, Wyseby Hill Cottage. Limousin bullocks sold to 224.5p from A. and W.J. Taylor and Son, Dashwellgreen.

Young bulls were a good show of quality and more numbers required. Top of 213.5p twice, both for Limousins from Mr A. Moffat, 6 Stonehouse.

Once again OTM cattle met a brisk trade and topped at 193.5p for a Charolais from T. Armstrong and Son, Sceughdyke.

A smaller show of 1,695 spring lambs averaged 189.5p per kilo (SQQ 190.3p), following this week decline in trade. Another good show of 4,097 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers with trade similar on the week, hill ewes and small ewes still short of buyers requirements. Rams demand premium prices and more could be sold.

BORDER LIVESTOCK

DURING the week ending Friday, June 29, Border Livestock Exchange Ltd sold 141 prime cattle including 41 cast cows, 949 prime sheep including 219 ewes and 64 store cattle.

Top prices went to Bonjedward Mill, Jedburgh, for an Aberdeen Angus cross steer which realised 380p per kg to Well Hung and Tender, Berwick. Continental heifers from Swinhoe Farm, Belford, sold to 350p per kg. Charolais cross heifers from New Smailholm sold to 356p per kg. Dairy cows experienced the dearest trade so far selling to 280p per kg for pure Holsteins from Kelloe Mains, Duns. Heifers from North Doddington to 337p per kg. Veal calves continue to be short of requirements selling to 305p per kg flat rate from West Meikle Pinkerton, Dunbar, Blackadder Mains, Duns, and Baldersbury Hill, Berwick.

Lambs slightly easier than previous weeks but killing out reasonably well. Organic lambs from Middle Moor, Alnwick, sold to 485p and £100.80 per head. Texel crosses from Shieldykes also sold to 485p per kg. Export lambs from Goswick Farm, Beal, sold to 430p per kg and £90.30. Continental lambs from Cresswell Farm, Belford, sold to 435p per kg £91.35.

Store cattle very short of requirements and heavily sought after of similar prices to recent weeks. Charolais heifers to 220p per kg live and £910 per head.
