ST BOSWELLS

AT St Boswells Mart on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 101 clean cattle, 126 OTM cattle and 4,302 prime sheep comprising 3,202 lambs and 1,100 ewes.

Bullocks (49) averaged 203p per kg (n/c on the week) and sold to 220p, gross £1331 from Bee Edge. Heifers (52) averaged 203.1p per kg (+1.1p on the week) and sold to226 p from Bee Edge, gross £1420 from Willowford. The 124 beef type OTM cattle averaged 134.8p per kg (n/c on the week) and sold to 184p from Wester Middleton, gross £1399 from Kersknowe. The two dairy type OTM cattle averaged 118p per kg and sold to 125p, gross £768 from Sandyknowe.

The 2,599 prime lambs averaged 207p per kg (+2.8p on the week) and sold to £110.50 a head from M/s Sinclair, Crookston and 234.5p per kg from Mr Strang Steel, Threepwood. 1,456 lambs ranging 39kg–42kg averaged 214.4 (£85.71 per head). 603 light lambs averaged 183.7 and sold to £81.50 a head from George Brown and Sons, Stoneypath, and 205.7p per kg from Scamblesby Farms, Huntershall. The 1100 ewes averaged £71.50 (-£4.71 on the week) and sold to £125 from M/s Green, The Craggs. Tups sold to £123 from M/s Helm, Haltree.

AT their weekly Primestock sale held at Wooler last Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 1,113 lambs and 275 ewes.

Lambs not quite as plentiful but demand remained very firm, more lambs could easily be handled, overall average 199.2p for 43.2 kg. 440 Lambs 39-42kgs averaged 209.6p. SQQ 208.81p

THE Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 44 prime cattle, 11 young bulls, 37 over 30 month cattle, 6,219 prime lambs and 6,157 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

A smaller show of prime cattle and a good show of well fleshed cattle saw a brisk trade throughout, topping at 214.5p (twice) for Charolais heifers from J.W. Vevers, High Stenries, purchased by J.A. Jewitt Ltd., Wholesalers and Border Meats, Butchers, Lockerbie.

A plain show of OTM’s saw a firm trade and topped at 163.5p for a Limousin cow from W.H. and D.A. Gass, Nunscleugh.

Another excellent show of 6,219 prime lambs were forward to more new buyers resulting in a fabulous trade. The sale averaged 200p per kilo overall or 202.8p per kilo SQQ.

A large number of 45kilo + lambs were forward and more export lambs could be sold to advantage.
