AT St Boswells Mart on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 94 clean cattle, 75 OTM cattle, 3,057 spring lambs and 1,259 ewes.

Bullocks (50) averaged 201.2p per kg (-1.9p on the week) and sold to 221p from Woodhead. A, and Honeyburn, gross £1370 from Honeyburn. Heifers (38) averaged 195p per kg (1.0p on the week) and sold to 216p from Pathhead, gross £1417 from Stagehall. The six young bulls averaged 180.2p per kg (+5.2p on the week) and sold to 209p gross £1504 from Humebyres. The 75 beef type OTM cattle averaged 134.3p per kg (n/c on the week) and sold to 178p from Roxburgh Mains and Bedrule, gross £1477 from Kersknowe.

The 3,057 spring lambs averaged 170p per kg (+0.9p on the week) and sold to £85 a head from Huntington and 187.8p per kg from A Lambie, Acreknowe. The 1259 ewes averaged £63.69 (-£3.32 on the week) and sold to £97 Spotsmains, £124 for tups from Firm of Gray, Sunnycroft.

BORDER LIVESTOCK

DURING the week ending Friday, September 16, Border Livestock Exchange Ltd sold 110 prime cattle, 36 cows, 4,107 prime lambs, 782 cast ewes, 346 breeding sheep and 142 store and breeding cattle.

Prime cattle hit an all time high with all categories dearer on the week. Young bulls from Teneterhouse Farms sold to £1,354.50 with eight averaging £1,191 per head. Continental x steers from Legars, Kelso, also sold to £1,354.70. Highlight of the cattle sales was dairy cows from Kelloe Mains, Duns, reaching £1,258.60 easily smashing the previous record price.

Lambs continue to sell steadily with well bred export types commanding a premium. Texel x medium weights to £80.85 Tughall Farm, Chathill; Hollybush and Nether Barns, Galashiels. Heavy lambs to £80.40 Primside Farm, Yetholm. Continental x to 390p per kilo Hardenpeel, Jedburgh and Threeburnford, Oxton. Breeding sheep were in demand with mule gimmers selling to £165. Meatlinc x gimmers to £155.
