AT St Boswells Mart on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 88 clean cattle, 77 OTM cattle, 2,615 spring lambs and 455 ewes.

Bullocks (40) averaged 192.2p per kg (-1.8p on the week) and sold to 214p from Wester Ulston, gross £1495 from Longnewton. Heifers (33) averaged 193.6p per kg (+2.6p on the week) and sold to 209p from Wester Middleton, gross £1203 from Lurdenlaw. The 15 young bulls averaged 190.5p per kg (+12.9p on the week) and sold to 202p from Carwood, Biggar, gross £1405 from Haughhead. The 77 beef type OTM cattle averaged 134p per kg (n/c on week) and sold to180p from Newstead, gross £1386 from Glenrath.

The 2,615 spring lambs averaged 189p per kg (-2.1p on the week) and sold to £97.50 a head from A Lamont, Ashkirktoun, and 202.7p per kg from JR and SE Purves, Wester Deans. The 453 ewes averaged £81.62 (+£1.80 on the week) and sold to £120 from W Pate, Craigsford Mains.

BORDER LIVESTOCK

DURING the week ending Friday, July 22, Border Livestock Exchange Ltd sold 117 prime cattle, 1,496 prime lambs, 296 ewes and 72 store and breeding cattle.

Prime cattle were topped at 335p for Aberdeen Angus Steers from Bonjedward Mill, Jedburgh, to Well Hung and Tender, Berwick. Organic cattle sold to 365p per kilo for home bred Limousin x steers from Hillhead Farm, Ponteland. Cull cows sold to £1,467 and 290p per kilo for pure Charolais’ from Kersknowe Farm, Kelso. Mature Shorthorn bulls from Housebyres, Melrose, sold to £1,322. 12 young bulls from Henlaw, Wooler, sold to £1,139 to average £1,017 per head and 310p per kilo. Limousin cows from Whitmuirhaugh, Kelso, sold to 280p per kilo with Simmental crosses selling to £1,185 from Redpath Farm, Duns.

Prime lambs remained a steady trade with best export types selling to 420p per kilo Hollybush, Galashiels, and Henlaw, Wooler. Texel crosses sold to 415p per kilo Outerston, Gorebridge, Blackcastle, Gorebridge, Langraw, Bonchester Bridge, Eastfield of Lempitlaw, Kelso, and Upper Chatto.

WOOLER

AT their weekly Primestock sale John Swan Limited had forward and sold 1352 Lambs and 273 Ewes.

Lamb numbers slightly curtailed by adverse weather, selling vendors receiving last week rates.

THE Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 70 prime cattle, one young bull, 45 over 30 month cattle, 4,105 prime lambs and 5,546 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

Another larger show of 69 prime cattle saw trade a shade easier on the week, although vendors remained satisfied. An increased number of over 30 month cattle saw a brisk trade throughout, selling to 137.5p and 136.5p for Limousin cows from W. Hodgson, Blindhillbush.

A larger show of 4,105 prime lambs sold to the usual ring of buyers. Trade was steady throughout with an overall average of 187.4p per kilo, which was well ahead of most centres this week.

Heavy lambs above 45 kilos were harder to sell as they aren’t fitting the export spec! Small lambs 30-37 kilos sold regularly at £2 per kilo and hard to buy as they are being pushed by the store trade.

The sale was topped at 226p per kilo for Texels from Nettling Flatt, with a top per head of £97.50 for Texels from Messrs Hutton, How Farm.

A massive show of 5,546 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers. Trade for big ewes and Mule ewes were £4 to £5 up on the week with the best fleshed hill ewes a similar trade on the week. The smaller leaner ewes were £3 to £4 easier on the week but still looked well sold.
