At St Boswells Mart on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 111 clean cattle, 29 OTM cattle, 2588 prime hoggs and 360 ewes.

Bullocks (56) averaged 181.8p per kg (-2.5p on the week) and sold to 203p from Nisbet, gross £1415 from Inland Pastures. Heifers (55) averaged 179.3p per kg (-1.9p on the week) and sold to 200p, gross £1154 from Lurdenlaw. The 29 beef type OTM cattle averaged 140.6p per kg (+13.6p on the week) and sold to 179p from Mindrum Farming, gross £1606 from Humbie Mill.

The 2,588 prime hoggs averaged 243.3p per kg (+7.4p on the week) and sold to £147 a head for 18 Suffolks from M/s Mauchlen, Spotmains and 279p per kg for Texels from M/s Sharp Lower Ashtrees

The 360 ewes averaged £92.89 (+£2.83 on the week) and sold to £143 for Texels from Huntington Partnership, Lauder.

Prime hoggs sold to extreme rates with a full ring of buyers in attendance; the whole sale averaging £101.88 for a 41kg average, peaking at £147 for 18 Suffolks. A highlight of the sale was a consignment of 214 tremendous hoggs from M/s Mason and Sons, East Farm, Malton, North Yorkshire averaging £128.77. Cast ewes and ramss were dearer again peaking at £143 for Texels.

BERWICK

Border Livestock Exchange Ltd to week ending Friday April 8 sold 149 prime cattle including 41 cows, 448 prime sheep including 30 new season lambs, 168 cast ewes and 264 store cattle.

Cattle trade continues to rise with AA x Bullock from Bonjedward Mill selling to 310p per kg to Well Hung and Tender, Berwick upon Tweed. Continental crosses from Hallrule Farms, Bonchester Bridge to 310p per kg averaging £1,082 also Newhouses, Hallington to 310p per kg for Charolais crosses. Limousin cross bullocks and heifers to 308p per kg Highwood, Hexham, Sandystones, St Boswells and Shidlaw, Cornhill on Tweed. Organic bullocks from Tullochallum Farm, Dufftown to 330p for 24 to average £1,185 per head. Cast cows and bulls sold to record levels again with Belgian blue young bulls from Bowsden Moor, Berwick upon Tweed selling to £1,487 per head. Mature saler bulls from Lowick Hall, Berwick upon Tweed to £1,367 with young bulls from the same farm to £1,276. Mature AA bullocks £1273 from Pallinsburn, Cornhill on Tweed. Belgian blue cows from Bowsden Moor sold to £1,328 while hill cows sold to £942 for blue grey and Galloway crosses. Simmental cross cows to £1246 from Hillhead.

In the sheep department the first new season lambs of the year sold to 540p per kg and £113 per head from Lempitlaw, Kelso and Whitehaugh Farm, Hawick. Organic lambs to 510p per kg and £107 from Tullochallum Farm, Dufftown.

Tremendous numbers of store cattle are being sold at prices very similar to last springs exciting levels Limousin cross bullocks to £1,000. Simmental £950 and 10-month-old Belgian blue bullocks and heifers to £845

WOOLER

At their weekly Primestock sale held at Wooler last Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 630 hoggs and 155 ewes.

Hoggs, all classes very easily cleared, fleshed types especially dear.

LONGTOWN

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 67 prime cattle, nine young bulls, 29 over 30 month cattle, 5,328 prime hoggs and 4,196 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

Yet another outstanding show of quality prime cattle on offer and a fantastic trade was had for all classes of cattle. Top price of the day to 201.5p (twice) for Limousin heifers from A. and W.J. Taylor & Son, Dashwell Green and A. Irving, Toppin Castle, bought by Border Meats, Lockerbie and Jewitts Wholesalers. Mr A. Irving sold five bullocks and heifers to average 194.5p and Mr Taylor sold 14 bullocks and heifers to average 188.5p.

Prime bulls met a brisk trade and more numbers required. Top price of 176.5p for Charolais from Shaw of Dryfe with Black and Whites to 154.5p Harelawhole.

An excellent show of 5,328 prime hoggs was forward to the usual ring of buyers. Trade was flying all day creating a centre record average of 243.9p per kilo (SQQ 246p per kilo). More well fleshed hoggets could easily have been sold, but small hoggs also were easy to sell.

Included in the sale was the Annual Show of Blackface hoggs which was ably judge by Mr Haig Murray, Dunbia Ltd. The Championship was awarded to Messrs J.P. Fisher, Smalmstown and later sold to the judge at £121.50 for 48 kilos. Prize list:– up to 42 kilos – 1st prize Cleugh Brae, 2nd prize Glenshanna, 43 kilos and over – 1st prize Smalmstown, 2nd prize Milnmark.

An excellent run of 382 hoggs from Messrs Crick, Beach Farm averaged 238p per kilo and 190 superb Texel hoggs from Messrs MacTaggart Bros. sold to average £119.62 with a run of 231 Blackface hoggs from Smalmstown averaging £114.53.
