ST BOSWELLS

At St Boswells Mart on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 137 clean cattle, 80 OTM cattle, 1,216 prime hoggs and 309 ewes.

Bullocks (64) averaged 178.5p per kg (+6.2p on the week) and sold to 206p from Fawside, gross £1351 from Inland Pastures. Heifers (66) averaged 177.7p per kg (+5.7p on the week) and sold to 200p from Humbie Mill, gross £1115 from Mosstower. The seven young bulls averaged 156p per kg (+ 6.0p on the week) and sold to 174p from Haughhead, gross £1234 from Over Whitlaw. The 80 beef type OTM cattle averaged 128p per kg (+ 9.0p on the week) and sold to 164p from Butchercote, gross £1263 from Traprain.

The 1,216 prime hoggs averaged 221.4p per kg (-0.4p on the week) and sold to £129 a head for Suffolks from S and G Sutherland, New Channelkirk, and 253.9p per kg for a pen of Beltex from Sir Strang-Steel, Philiphaugh, Selkirk.

The 309 ewes averaged £87.71 (+£10.27 on the week) and sold to £150 for Suffolks from S and G Sutherland, New Channelkirk.

Prime hoggs once again met a flying trade where more could have been sold to advantage, averaging £89.76 for a 40.5kg, with top price £129 for Suffolks and 253.9p per kg for a pen of Beltex hoggs.

A quality show of cast ewes and rams was forward with more buyers than ever in attendance, with trade peaking at £150 for Suffolks.

Berwick

Border Livestock Exchange Ltd, week ending Friday March 25, sold 141 prime cattle including 48 cows, 864 prime lambs, 286 ewes and 164 store cattle.

Cattle trade continues to firm as numbers tighten. Top price per kg was AA x bullock from Bonjedward Mill, Jedburgh selling to 304p per kg to Well Hung and Tender, Berwick upon Tweed. Other AA x Bullocks sold to 302p per kg from Sandystones, St Boswells. Organic cattle sold to 315p per kg (£1,250) from Tullochallum Farm, Dufftown for Home Bred Steers. Cast bulls sold to £1405 from Borewell Farm, Berwick upon Tweed for a tremendous Aberdeen Angus home-bred bull.

Prime lambs sold to 485p per kg for Organics from Tullochallum Farm, Dufftown. Export Lambs sold to 460p per kg from Roddam Estates, Wooler. Suffolk crosses from Doddington Farm, Wooler sold to 450p per kg. Lleyn Lambs from Sharpitlaw, Kelso sold to £107 per head.

WOOLER

At their weekly Primestock Sale held at Wooler last Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 1,104 hoggs and 89 ewes.

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 56 prime cattle, four young bulls, 24 over 30 month cattle, 6,661 prime hoggs and 4,524 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

A mixed offering of prime cattle presented to the usual attendance of buyers. Trade upheld recent levels. Limousin heifers to 186.5p and 181.5p Dashwell Green, 178.5p Hallburn; Charolais 183.5p Hallburn, 173.5p Upper Mains. Heifers to £1,145.10 Upper Mains, £1,118.60 Wicket Thorn. Young bulls were sharper, selling to 162.5p for Charolais from Shaw of Dryfe; Limousin 160p (£1,136) Morley Hill.

A monster show of 6,661 prime hoggs were forward to a full ring of buyers meeting one of the best trades saw anywhere for many years. The whole sale average was 218p per kilo and that included 1,263 hoggets under 32 kilos and 800 hoggets over 52 kilos. An excellent run of 370 hoggets from Messrs Crick, Beach Farm, sold to a top of £107.50 and averaged 225p per kilo.

Also held was the annual show and sale of Cheviot hoggets, kindly sponsored by P.J. Tractor Parts, Longtown, and which was ably judged by Mr Andrew Dawson, Sedbergh. The overall champions in the South Country Cheviot section was won by Messrs Cartner, Blackwoodridgehouse, which scaled 51 kilos and realised £114.50 to Mr R. Booth. In the North Country Cheviot section the championship was awarded to a pen of 42 kilos from Messrs Graham, Lawshall, realising £100 to Mr J. Tucker.
