Gritting update – icy conditions ahead

Snow Blower at Stichill

Snow Blower at Stichill

Gritting teams have completed first priority routes however some sections of the first priority route network remain single track due to the impact of drifting snow.

Teams are revisiting these routes with snow blowers and JCBs this morning to ensure the roads return to normal width as quickly as possible.

Particular areas affected are sections of the following routes:

Stow–Lauder

Longformacus–Gifford

Cranshaws-Gifford

Kelso-Greenlaw

Kelso-Morebattle

Kelso-Yetholm

Teams moved onto secondary routes from 8am this morning (Wednesday), and will continue to treat these routes for the remainder of the day. This will include footpaths and town centre areas and car parks.

SBC’s Neighbourhood Operations Manager Kenny Hastings explained: “We continue to ask for members of the public to be patient during this challenging time and we are doing our utmost to keep the Borders on the move with all available resources.

“The forecast has confirmed that road surface temperatures could reach as low as minus seven tonight, so our gritting teams will react as appropriate. Drivers and pedestrians are therefore being reminded to take caution as the conditions are particularly icy.”
