Gill and Justin reap rewards at prestigious awards

FAMILY-RUN caterer Gill Orde has scooped a finalist’s certificate in the Independent Event Caterer of the Year award, at the recent CIS Excellence Awards in Glasgow.

The prestigious award was judged by double Michelin-starred Andrew Fairlie, with in-depth knowledge of local produce, and delivering the highest standards of service the key criteria used to judge the award.

From small beginnings, based in the family home, the company has gone from strength to strength, crafting an enviable reputation as the Scottish Borders’ premiere catering company.

In 2007, Gill’s son Justin joined the business and a renewed youthful ambition was brought to the firm.

Their high standards of service have seen Gill and Justin regularly invited to cater for visiting dignitaries – the Queen’s last visit to Lauder and Thirlestane Castle being a particular highlight.

Gill said: “I came to Scotland almost 40 years ago from South Africa and it was my ambition to cook for the Queen, which I have done twice since coming to the Borders. I fell in love with the region and I’m so proud to be an ambassador for our great local produce.

“It’s been a fantastic few years and it’s great to see that our hard work is paying off.”

Described as the hardest working woman in catering, at 68 years old, Gill is something of a legend among her peers. Justin knows he has a tough act to follow.

“I’ve learned a lot from Mum but like Prince Charles I think I’ll have to wait a little time yet before getting the top job.”
