Farming start

the famous Lauder Herd Supper takes place on Friday February 18 at the Lauderdale Hotel in Lauder.

The all-male evening will be chaired by Heriot sheep farmer Jimmy Sinclair and speakers will include Peter Lothian, Scott Brown, Peter Bell, Alistair Lindsay and Harry Dodds.

One of the organising committee, Dougy Scott said: “The number of herds attending has depleted over the years but the support from people from other walks of life has never wavered and we hope to have in the region of 120 there on the night.”

The supper started in 1947 in the Thistle Inn, Westruther, said Mr Scott. That first night was so popular that the diners decided to make it an annual event which outgrew its Westruther home, moving to the Black Bull and then the Lauderdale Hotel

“There was always one shepherdess from Blythe Farm who enjoyed the night just as much as any of the males” said Mr Scott.

Speakers toast the herds, farmer and the chairman to which there are replies. Music will be provided by local piper Marc Wilkinson and Lauder recording artist Mike Whellans.

Mr Scott said: “This event has always been a chance for the herds and farmers and others to have an evening of good food, good speeches and excellent entertainment before they plunge into their lambing seasons and hectic months that follow.”
