Discount shop chain Lidl has been granted permission to increase shelf space for the sale of alcohol at its outlets in Hawick and Kelso.

The Kelso store in Shedden Park Road will see capacity go up from 36.68sq.m to 41.80sq.m, while display space at the Hawick branch in Wilton Path will increase from 34.65sq.m to 40.77sq.m.

Scottish Borders Licensing Board heard that represented around 4% of total sales capacity in both outlets – well within the maximum 10% recommended in the board’s off-sales policy for supermarkets.

The board also agreed to amend the operating plan for the Kelso store to allow the broadcast of recorded background music.
