BORDERS businessman, qualified plumber, inventor and former student of Borders College, Ross Dickinson, is a finalist in the 2011 Barclay’s Business Take One Small Step competition, having already won the New Start Scotland Bright Business Idea event earlier in the year.

He will thus be representing Scotland in London on November 18 after winning his heat of the UK’s premier small business competition last week.

Over the last three years the Walkerburn plumber has been developing his unique new device – the Kibosh Emergency Pipe Repair – which provides an affordable, quick and easy temporary fix for burst and frost- damaged water pipes or pipes that have been perforated accidentally.

The device is designed for anyone to use and is an extremely quick and effective way of stopping the flow of water from a burst pipe whilst still being able to use the pipe until a plumber can be called to make a permanent repair.

Ross attended Borders College and won the Plumbing Student of the Year Award.

“After leaving school with little or no qualifications I went from job to job, never really feeling satisfied with what I was doing,” recalled Ross this week. “I started at Borders College on the full-time plumbing course hoping I would be lucky enough to get an apprenticeship.

“At college I received a lot of encouragement and picked up valuable skills fairly quickly due to my experienced lecturers doing a great job.

“R. A. Walter Plumbing and heating kindly gave me an apprenticeship which covered the full spectrum of plumbing and heating.

“After leaving school I was diagnosed with dyslexia and I never really had the confidence to do anything outside my comfort zone. Going to college and learning my trade helped me no end and I believe it has given me the confidence to start my own plumbing business and go on to invent and develop the Kibosh which is launching soon.

“I especially want to thank lecturers John Rutherford, John Gilbert, John Rafferty, Brian Gibson and Ronnie Walter who helped me get to where I am today.”

Ross believes the Kibosh Emergency Pipe Repair will help people in a desperate situation caused by a burst water pipe and that the innovative device will hopefully eliminate the damage and destruction caused by flooding in the home or workplace.
