A PENSIONER is seriously ill in hospital after being rescued from his blazing flat in Galashiels, writes Kenny Paterson.

Brian Hart, 68, is being treated for burns and smoke inhalation at Glasgow Royal Infirmary where his condition is described as serious.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze in Langlee Drive shortly before 11pm on Monday and pulled him from his burning home.

Mr Hart’s wife Betty was not at home at the time . Their pet dog is being treated by local vets.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze started in the living room of the first floor flat and caused extensive damage .

The cause of the fire is as yet unknown. An investigation has been launched but it is not thought to be suspicious.
