ANY Galashiels resident who cares about the town’s future has been urged to stand for its community council.
Nominations are now open, with Galaleans having until midday on June 5 to put their names forward.
With the town set to change significantly during the coming years, Bill White, who was community council chairman until being elected as a Scottish Borders councillor earlier this month, believes the organisation is more important than ever.
Mr White, who will serve as returning officer for the election, said: “I would encourage anyone who has an interest in the town’s well-being to stand as a community councillor.
“I certainly enjoyed the nine years I spent on the community council.”
There are 15 places available, but should less than eight valid nominations be received, the community council would be stood down for six months until candidates can be called for again.
If eight to 15 nominations are submitted, a new community council will be declared on June 12, with the first meeting called the following day. But if more than 15 nominees put their names forward a ballot take place.
Nomination forms are available from Macari’s Café, Dalgleish Garage, visit www.scotborders.gov.uk/galashielselection or Mr White – email Bill.White@scotborders.gov.uk, phone 077670 03291 or in person at 1 Melrose Road, Galashiels.
