The A68 remains closed in both directions following an accident this morning south of the Carter Bar border.
Northumbria police were called to the multi-vehicle collision at around 7.45am at the A68 junction at Elishaw.
A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “There have been some hazardous conditions on the roads, with ice, debris and an oil spillage reported at the scene.
“The debris is taking some time to clear.”
Police on the Scottish side of the border are redirecting southbound traffic left to the A1 and right to the A7, while Northumbria police are sending northbound cars towards the A7.
