Local volunteers and archaeologists from GUARD Archaeology of Glasgow last Friday after spending five days investigating Old Melrose by geophysical survey.

The team conducted a gradiometer and resistivity survey over rough pastureland, through flocks of sheep, entangled undergrowth, and myriads of insects in some of the highest temperatures and humidity this summer, with the threat of thunderstorms ever present.

The results may lead to further work and an excavation to discover the layers of history in this significant site. The location has long been known as the probable site of one of the most important early Christian monasteries dating from the 7th century AD where St Cuthbert first entered monastic life.
