Tom Lindsay, who had spent almost 20 years of retirement with his wife, Jenny, in the village of Gattonside, was a Shawlands Academy boy.
He trained as a metallurgist at what is now Strathclyde University and worked for many years in the engineering world in the Midlands where his family was born.

At one time he was involved in improving the railway network in Korea.

As a member of the Methodist Church, he rose to be circuit steward, involved, as the Rev. A. Bennett said, in that church’s practice of “moving ministers on”.

In retirement, in addition to being a proud grandfather of many, an enthusiastic bowler and a man who knew about the careful treatment of church heating boilers, he was an elder of Melrose Parish Church, holding the office of presbytery elder for a time and singing in the choir, which turned out in force for the well-attended funeral service.
