SCOTLAND'S finance chief John Swinney is returning to the Borders for talks after the latest losses in the knitwear industry.
Mr Swinney – the SNP Government’s Secretary of Finance and Sustainable Growth – held talks in Hawick during the summer when Pringle of Scotland closed production in the town.

Over recent weeks the town’s once-staple industry has again been hit. Hawick Knitwear is axeing 36 jobs and Hawick Cashmere is trimming 12. Both companies say the cuts are needed to safeguard surviving production.

During First Minister’s Questions in Holyrood earlier this month, Alex Salmond pledged that the man with his hand on the purse strings would revisit the Borders for talks.

Mr Swinney is coming on December 8 – exact details are not yet known, but he is expected to meet industry leaders and local politicians.
