NEW Melrosian Scott Roy will bear his black and gold rosette with pride as he represents his beloved burgh throughout a hectic summer, writes Bob Burgess.
The self-employed fencing sub contractor says he is looking forward to visiting other Border towns – but his proudest highlight will be his own town’s week-long festival celebrations.
The 19-year-old was named as Melrosian in January and was formally appointed at a ceremony on Friday night.
He told TheSouthern: “It was a tremendous occasion. I was really proud and it was great to see so many principals attending from around the Borders.
“I have always been a keen supporter of Melrose Festival and being appointed as Melrosian is absolutely brilliant. I am looking forward to taking part in the many rideouts and supporting other principals.”
Scott had a promising rugby career cut short by a shoulder injury. It happened during a training session with Melrose Wasps and was aggravated during a match against Gala. It led to an operation which ended his playing career, although he remains a loyal supporter of rugby at the Greenyards.
The injury didn’t affect his guitar-playing or dart-throwing and he enjoys music and socialising.
Proud parents Duncan and Jayne and brother Ross, 21, will be giving him their full support. Former marine engineer Duncan, who runs a newsagents in Lauder, commented: “It is wonderful and we are all very proud of him.”
And mum Jayne, a special needs teacher at Melrose Grammar School, added: “I am very excited and very proud.”
Supporting Scott throughout his term of office will be his Right and Lefthand Men, ex-Melrosians Iain Oliver and David Crawford.
This year’s festival begins on June 15 with the Kirkin’ of the Melrosian in the Parish Church, followed by a rideout the following night; a fancy dress parade on the Tuesday; a community cycle ride on the Wednesday; the Crowning of Melrose Queen Alexis Green in the ruins of the Abbey on Thursday; the Friday night ball and Saturday’s ceremonial tour, followed by the children’s sports.
