DESPITE emanating from a senior source at Scottish Borders Council, reports that staff at the local authority could face a pay cuts of up to £10,000 have been branded a "huge exaggeration".
Hundreds of white collar employees face a salary reduction as the council moves to implement "single status", a radical simplification of pay scales, this summer.

The same process, linked to equal pay, will see more than 70 per cent of SBC's 4,000 personnel, excluding teachers, benefit from higher remuneration.

A spokesperson from SBC said this week: "I understand less than 30 people in the whole council will lose more than £3,000 and this is not likely to exceed £5,000, which is a small figure considering the number of employees. Our position is that negotiations are still on-going so we cannot comment further."

Those whose wages are cut will have their income protected for three years, although they will not be entitled to any negotiated increases during that period.
