PROPOSALS to install eight traditional wooden caravans on a three-acre paddock just outside Bowden have attracted 20 objections from local residents.
The bid to create a so-called "roulotte retreat" comes from yoga teacher/therapist Avril Berry and her psychotherapist husband Alan Fraser who have lived at Bowden Mill House, close to the kirk, for the past seven years. They claim their project would be unique in Scotland, offering "glamping" – the concept of glamorous camping by getting back to nature, but with an abundance of comforts.

Roulottes are traditional wooden caravans, created by French/Dutch designers and carpenters, and based on ancient Indian designs.

In a supporting statement to Scottish Borders Council's planning department, the couple say the development will be sheltered by trees and small-scale, relative to the size of the site which lies north of their property. Parking will be outwith the meadow and plans were already advanced to create a wildlife pond with new native shrubs and trees to enhance the site for wildlife and create more interest for visitors.

"We have researched the market in the UK and Europe, and visited sites in France," say the applicants.

"We aim to use our own skills as therapists teaching yoga (Ms Berry studied in India and London] and personal coaching, offering yoga and personal development courses using local facilities and services.

"We would link with other local businesses, complimentary therapists, artists and writers to offer extra interest for our visitors.
