BABIES and toddlers across the Borders will be taking part in special library Rhymetimes to celebrate today's Bookstart in Scotland Day, writes Mark Entwistle.
To mark the event, libraries in Melrose, Kelso, Hawick and Galashiels will be holding various events, including Rhymetimes at Melrose and Galashiels libraries (10.30am and 10am respectively).
At Hawick Library, Cornet Ben Graham will be coming along to join in the fun which starts at 10.15am.
During the Rhymetime at Kelso, starting at 11am, there will be a prize presentation to four-year-old Nathan Proud, who won a competition to choose his favourite nursery rhyme. Nathan will receive a teddy bear and a book prize.
Libraries hold regular Rhymetime sessions where parents with babies and young children can join in singing nursery and action rhymes, using puppets and baby instruments. They also listen to stories and look at picture and board books.
Parents can contact their local library for further details, or bring their baby or toddler along to one of the free events.
Bookstart is the national programme that encourages all parents and carers to enjoy books with children from as early an age as possible. It is the world's first national books-for-babies programmme, delivering free packs of books to babies and toddlers in the UK.
As part of a survey organised by Bookstart, children throughout Scotland recently nominated their favourite rhyme.
The following rhymes were chosen in the Borders as favourites: 1, Incy Wincy Spider; 2, Little Green Frog; 3, Row Row Row Your Boat; 4, Ally Bally; 5, Humpty Dumpty; 6, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star; 7, Baa Baa Black Sheep; 8, Wheels on the Bus; 9, Hey Diddle Diddle; 10, Cross Cross, Line Line.
The number one nursery rhyme in Scotland was found by the survey to be Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, followed closely by Humpty Dumpty.
