A FULL house is expected at the Pavilion Cinema in Galashiels this Saturday, as the curtain goes up on the fourth VOMO Film Festival, writes Lisa Cowan.
Running from 10.30am until 2.30pm, the festival is an annual spectacle where young cinematographers from all over our region have the opportunity to showcase their talent to a large audience.
Organisers promise there will be even more of an exciting mix of fun, glitz and cutting-edge film-making this year, and the Pavilion Cinema arrives as a new festival partner.
"The new location has caused a wave of excitement," says VOMO project manager Mary Morrison. "Seeing this year's incredible line-up of films on the big screen will be an amazing experience for us all."
VOMO, which stands for a Voice Of My Own, is a video-empowerment project for young people in the Borders who want to make films about issues that are important to them. The project is highly regarded in its ability to engage with young people from all backgrounds through the medium of film.
"VOMO is making a difference to young lives across the Borders" says Ms Morrison. "The young people are able to use the project to get their voices heard. This means that a significant number of our region's marginalised youth are becoming more involved in decisions which affect their lives, which is a fantastic outcome."
This is especially true of one of the films to be showcased at this year's festival. "Mob Rule" hit the headlines last year and roused the community of Jedburgh.
Such was the film's impact on the town its premiere attracted an audience of nearly 200 people both young and old.
After an article appeared in TheSouthern detailing

concerns that young
people were running wild in Jedburgh, local youngsters set out to put the record straight in their own way.
Their subsequent documentary examined both sides of the story which helped all members of the community positively identify with one another.
This year's event will also premiere a rather stirring film titled I am Who I Am, which looks at issues of identity, social groups and labelling.
The film is a VOMO first, being an all-girl film project. It is a frank, moving and funny film, which throws up many questions about how we see each other.
In addition to a selection of challenging documentaries there will also be a collection of fantastic animations, sci-fi, drama and spoof horror movies to enjoy while you tuck into your popcorn.
MC for the day will
be Welsh stand-up
and TV and radio funny man Nigel Buckland.
After a successful year

of producing films and collaborating with comics such as Frankie Boyle, Craig Hill and Fred MacAulay, Nigel is raring to go.
"This will be the third VOMO Film Festival I have been asked to present," Buckland says, "and I am always astounded by the high level of material which is produced by these young film-makers. Their talent is incredible."
So, if you fancy snapping up a free ticket to this spectacular event you must hurry, as seats are limited.
Tickets must be booked in advance to ensure you are on the guest list for this year's extravaganza. You can do this by sending an email to the VOMO team at enquiries@vomo.org.uk or by calling 01750 724901.
Some films maybe unsuitable for under 12s.
