A DELIGHTED Jon Threadgall has become the sixth member of his family to be appointed as Lauder Cornet.
And he can't wait to get his hands on the blue and gold flag that – in the words of the Common Riding song – his predecessors have safe and proudly borne.
Jon, 25, was named as the 2008 Cornet from the steps of the Town Hall on Friday.
And – as tradition demands – emerged from the Baker's Close to be carried shoulder high through the waiting crowd by his Right and Lefthand Men, immediate past Cornets Shaun Hardie and Lee Wilson.
The first Threadgall to carry the banner was Jon's grandfather Sid in 1956, followed by his uncle George in 1972, his father Sid in 1976, uncle Jock in 1981 and in 2006 his brother Scott.
Jon told TheSouthern: "I am proud to be representing Lauder and also proud to be carrying on a family tradition.
"It means a great deal to me and I can hardly wait.
"Of course the highlight will be our Common Riding week, but I am excited about meeting the principals from the other towns and making friendships which I know from family experiences will last a lifetime."
Cornet's Lass this year is Jon's girlfriend Marianne Graham, an aromatherapist from St Boswells.
Jon was educated at Newtown St Boswells Primary School and Earlston High School and went on to work with the Bank of Scotland, Dixons and Hi Fi Corner before becoming an account manager three years ago with brewery giants Scottish and Newcastle, based in Edinburgh.
Jon is no stranger to horseriding and was in the saddle three years ago in support of brother Scott.
He has been doing some ahead of the rideout to Threepwood Crossroads a week tomorrow to meet with the Braw Lad and Braw Lass from Galashiels, Jamie Hind and Lauren Horsburgh.
After the Town Hall declaration, Stow Pipe Band led the Ex-Cornets' Walk and Jon delighted in the warm response of townsfolk and visiting principals.
Jon's first official engagement as Cornet was the town's May Fayre in the Public Hall the day after his appointment. During the fayre the Cornet and his Right and Left-hand Men were presented with specially designed stockpins from the community council. From now on, each Cornet will receive a pin with a unique design for that year.
