TRIBUTES have been paid to a young gamekeeper killed in the Borders last week when his 4x4 rough terrain vehicle plunged over an embankment, writes Bob Burgess.
Philip Reid was driving on an off-road track on private land at Hownam, near Kelso, on Friday afternoon. Workmates went to his assistance, but he died at the scene and police confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances.

The 20-year-old was in his first year as an apprentice gamekeeper and lived at Hownam Mains Farm.

Mr Reid was a lover of the outdoors and in 2003 – aged 15 – he became the Scottish Youth Fly Fishing Champion. He was a supporter of Hibs and a keen member of the Tartan Army.

At the family home in Kirkliston, his dad, David, revealed: “He lived for shooting and fishing, and loved his life. He was always enthusiastic and we are so proud of his achievements.” Mum Lesley added: “Philip loved wearing his kilt and going to football matches. He was Scottish through and through.”

On his bebo website his girlfriend described him as an “angel”. Other friends have posted messages of condolences.

As is normal in such circumstances, a report is being sent to the procurator fiscal and it is likely a fatal accident inquiry will be held before a sheriff.
