Graeme Moffat of Lovel Court, Backdamgate, Hawick, pleaded guilty to the offence, which happened at Border Leisure in High Street on May 17.

Procurator fiscal Graham Fraser said the accused had a list of previous convictions and was observed on CCTV taking the packet of canisters which were worth a total of £4.50.

He added the concern was that the product could be used for inhaling.

Defence lawyer Ed Hulme said the theft was carried out as Moffat did not have any money to pay for heating as he was in a gap between getting benefits.

He explained his partner and himself had moved from Edinburgh to Hawick for a fresh start.
