WHAT is fast becoming the biggest event on the Borders Disability Sport calendar turned out to be a sizzling success last week.

Athletes came from all over the region to enjoy the first-class facilities at Jedburgh Grammar School Sports Centre.

Not one to let a bit of good weather put him off, SBC's Disability Sports Development Officer Jed Renilson introduced skiing to the schedule for the first time and despite the soaring temperatures, the event proved highly popular.

Other sports enjoyed during the week were golf, football, tennis, athletics, boccia and new age curling.

Each event was delivered by coaches – all fully-trained by the national governing body – who were well-supported by additional needs auxiliaries from a range of schools.

Speaking after the three-day event, Renilson told TheSouthern: "Everyone had a great experience and the weather made everyone smile.

"The skiing went down really well, as did the golf, which is also a new addition to our programme.

"Although the emphasis of the event is to try out these sports and have some fun, there is always a bit of a competitive edge to it.

Throughout the week, we have discovered several talented athletes who otherwise may not have been recognised.

"As usual, the support staff was first class, as were the facilities, and the Disability Sports Group can't thank Jedburgh Grammar enough for allowing us to use them."

Athletes completed each of the action-packed sessions by enjoying a healthy packed lunch.

Last month, Renilson took three five-a-side football teams to Glasgow Green to compete at the Scottish Championships, in which 48 teams from all over Scotland took part.

A first for Borders Group, the trip, which was organised in conjunction with Interest Link Borders, was a great success.

It is hoped to include some ladies' teams for next year's event.
This Saturday, the football theme continues when members of the group travel south.

They have been invited by Annan and Eskdale Disability, in partnership with Gretna FC Community Group to compete in a 7-aside tournament in Langholm before watching Gretna attempt to secure promotion in their final home league game of the season against Clyde.
