ANCRUM racers John and Steven Gotterson joined 136 riders recently for the opening round of the 2007 Scottish Championships held at Lochgelly, Fife.

Competing in the 200cc event, 15-year-old John took to the quad's modifications like a duck to water, getting off to an impressive start before problems took hold.

Losing fourth gear caused major problems to his riding style and after battling
with his machine, slipped from third to eighth.

With no time to work on his gears before race two and three the Jedburgh Grammar pupil came fifth in the second event and seventh in the third.

Overall, however, John took fifth place on the day, although a major rebuild of his gear box and the rear end of his quad is needed before the next meeting.

Steven, 16, rode in the adults support class on his Yamaha 450 YZF. A student mechanic at Borders College, he rode a four-lap qualifying race to find the top 10 fastest riders to make the adult As – the rest went to the Bs.

An impressive performance saw the local teenager into the top flight. And despite losing his clutch cable in race one and having to change his riding tactics to a more aggressive style, Steven managed to take 14th place overall on the day.

Steven and John would like to thank their sponsors, Malcolm Miller and Maxwell Motors of Kelso, and T & M Motorcycles for all the race preparation for Lochgelly and the repairs to be done on both quads for the next race meeting on April 29 at Drumglog.
