Tour back next year
THE Tour o’ the Borders returns next year after a successful first event in the spring.
Two distances will be offered in the cycling sportive in April next year: 70 miles and 49 miles.
The event has been organised by Neil Dalgleish, who set up TweedLove bike festival and John Anderson of Bicycle Works bike shops and racing teams.
Mr Dalgleish said: “We had a great first year. Feedback from riders gave us a big thumbs up, but we thought we’d add the choice of a shorter course using the same area’s deserted, scenic roads. It’s perfect for an event like this.”
Mr Anderson said: “There are some exceptionally stiff climbs on the tour and another great advantage of this area is how quiet these roads are – you hardly see a car all day.”
The sportive is timed, but not organized in a road race format. Mr Dalgleish said: “The aim is to give everyone a great day out on the bike on a scenic, rewarding course, with the fun and satisfaction of taking part in a shared challenge.”
There has been controversy over the cost of entering sportives – some costing more than £60.
Mr Dalgleish said: “Events all over the country are reporting decreasing numbers, but our aim is to fight the problems by giving extra value and keeping costs as low as we can,” said Mr Dalgliesh.
Entry for the event, on April 14, costs £30 until the end of September and thereafter is £35. For more information visit www.tourotheborders.com
