The attactions of cycling in the Borders

CHAMPIONS of Borders cycling are going to Holland to promote the region in the new year.

The Scottish Borders Recreational Cycling Group is using some of its LEADER funding to attend the Vakantiebeurs holiday exhibition in Utrecht in the Netherlands at the beginning of next month.

The group’s project officer Neen Kelly said: “We chose Utrecht as it is a good market for the Borders and the Dutch love cycling. More than 120,000 people visited the exhibition last year.

“We will be promoting the variety and quality of cycle routes, accommodation, attractions etc on offer here and the good access to the area via the ferry route from the Netherlands to Hull.”

The stand will be staffed by group members including tourism business operators from Newcastleton.

The group’s two-year LEADER funding ends in March and the main aim has been to promote the Borders as Scotland’s leading cycling destination said Ms Kelly.

As part of the promotion the group developed a website – www.cyclescottishborders.com – which lists more than 40 road cycling routes, cycle-friendly accommodation, bike hire, cafes, attractions and other information.

Ms Kelly said: “The remaining activity (until funding finishes) will focus on PR and promoting the website by advertising online and through search engine optimisation.”
