Best practice on deer
AN EVENT about best practice for wild deer takes place in the Borders next month.
The workshop at The Hirsel, Coldstream on Thursday October 11 will range from the management of deer to butchery, environmental implications and shooting.
SNH’s wildlife management manager, Alastair MacGugan, will speak on the code of practice on deer management. Master butcher Bruce Brymer is set to hold a practical butchery workshop while the Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) deer officer, Jamie Hammond, and former senior forensic scientist, Jim Govan, will talk about shooting in their Bullets, Barrels and Ballistics contribution.
Forestry Commission (FC) Scotland’s Ron Rose will talk about assessing the impact of deer on woodland and on cull planning.
The information day for land managers and deer practitioners is organised by the Deer Initiative, SNH, Hirsel Estate and FC Scotland.
Those attending will take home a best practice guide by the Deer Initiative, set up in 1995 to promote the sustainable management of wild deer in England. The guide covers legislation, health and safety and welfare, species ecology, deer management, records and survey, disease, culling, meat hygiene, firearms, equipment and other information.
