This giant tumshie weighed-in at twenty two and a half pounds when it was unearthed at Major Leslie Melville’s farm at Bridgelands near Selkirk in April 1983.

It was dug out on April 1 – but was no April Fool. Pictured with the turnip are his grandchildren– sitting: Charlotte Brodie, James Leslie Melville and Anna Brodie; standing: Alexander Brodie and Harry
Leslie Melville. The major told The
Southern : “ We have some very fertile land and are getting some very big
turnips this year but this one was
exceptional.”
