SNP’s new Kelso branch

A NEW Scottish National Party branch has been set up in Kelso, writes Kenny Paterson.

The first meeting of the group was last night, with a poetry night to take place tonight (Thursday) from 7.30pm in the Ace Centre.

And Saturday sees an exhibition of sculptures and paintings with a common theme of independence at the Wee Gallery in the town’s Knowes car park.

The branch will look to boost nationalist support in the Kelso district, which is one of only three Scottish Borders Council wards without an SNP councillor.

Kelso activist Adam Stevenson said: “We warmly welcome anyone who is interested in the future of Scotland to join us.

“Because the Borders is such a large area, it can be difficult to feel much of a sense of connection with events in other areas.

“That’s why we’ve decided to form this branch on our own doorstep. Some people will already know one another and others will make new friends.

“Please do come along, whatever your views, and let’s have a forum everyone wants to feel a part of.”

The group aim to drum up support for the independence campaign over the coming months.

Mr Stevenson, 22, added: “This group offers a chance to meet with people who are going to have lots of shared interests in music, art, drama and a whole range of different cultural activities. We’re already working on a series of events to raise the local profile of the Yes campaign and to get people talking about what independence in Scotland could mean to them as individuals.”
