KELSO crime writer Tony Black could soon see his work on the big screen, after a deal was recently struck to have one of his books turned into a high-profile film.

Black, 39, is linking up with director Richard Jobson for the movie of, Long Time Dead, featuring popular character, Gus Drury.

The two men are hopeful that Scottish actor Dougray Scott, who has hit the big time in Hollywood with major parts in films such as Mission Impossible 2, with Tom Cruise, will bring Drury to life.

Black recently returned to Edinburgh after spells in Australia and Dublin. He said recently that Jobson had enjoyed the Drury novels, but Long Time Dead had really sparked his interest as a director.

“I’m completely confident he will do a good job of it – he portrayed Edinburgh brilliantly in New Town Killers,” Black was quoted as saying.

First published in 2007, Black’s work has since become a central part of the so-called “tartan noir” genre of Scottish crime fiction. His latest book, Truth Lies Bleeding, was acclaimed when launched at the Edinburgh Book Festival.

Black, a former Edenside Primary pupil, used to work as a sub-editor for the Scotsman group of newspapers in Edinburgh.

Long Time Dead, the fourth book about Drury, came out last year. In it, the former journalist and alcoholic Dury becomes a reluctant crime investigator. We find him back on the booze and waking up in hospital after a hit-and-run accident involving a motorised wheelchair.

Drury eventually becomes involved in the investigation of a ritual hanging of the son of a well-known actress. But rather than being a simple suicide, as the police believe, things begin to take on a more sinister aspect, with the involvement of a secret society and the Masons.
