Jack proves to be a giant draw in Gala
Nearly 2,000 Borderers filed through the doors of Galashiels’ Volunteer Hall last week to prove that pantomime remains a popular part of the festive tradition in this region.
Jack and the Beanstalk, staged over four nights by the Right Angle Theatre Company, ended it’s run on Saturday.
Producer Susan Shearer, who wrote the show, said the 500-capacity venue was sold out on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with just a handful of tickets left for the final night.
She was full of praise for the audiences’ participation – particularly the younger element: “The kids were absolutely superb, joining in with the performances.”
The company’s business manager, Gordon Keddie, added: “We are always well supported – but this year was better than last.” The Right Angle Theatre Company has members from all over the Borders, with a wide range of ages.
“We had a cast of about 60. The youngest was just five years old and the oldest in their 70s,” said Mr Keddie.
That most youthful member was Ellie Bryson, who played one of the children. The show was also a milestone for Amy Osmond (Princess Rose) in her first principal girl part.
The title role of Jack was filled by Hilary Thomson, a long-serving Right Angle member with 17 years’ service.
This is the 22-year-old company’s 18th year of panto – and the second time it has performed Jack and the Beanstalk, although the first version had a distinctly Scots flavour with the title Jock and the Beanstalk.
