Innerleithen date for Karen Matheson and Craig Jeffrey

Innerleithen Music Festival. Karen Matheson.

Innerleithen Music Festival. Karen Matheson.

Tickets have gone on sale for a concert with Karen Matheson, one of Scotland’s foremost female singers from the Celtic super-group Capercaillie, at Innerleithen’s Memorial Hall on April 27.

Karen will be accompanied by two other well known faces – Donald Shaw from Capercaillie on piano and accordion, and James Grant from Love and Money on guitar. To add a local element to the evening, the concert will be opened by young Galashiels-based singer/songwriter Craig Jeffrey.

The concert has been organised by Innerleithen Music Festival as a curtain-raiser to their annual weekend of Celtic music in August. Committee member Robin Dempsey said: “Karen’s concerts are always special, and we’re very excited about this wonderful singer with a worldwide reputation coming to the town.”

Karen was brought up in the West Highlands immersed in the deep well of traditional Gaelic songs that have been her inspiration for over 20 years of recording and performing worldwide. She was awarded an OBE, and the title “Best Gaelic singer” from the inaugural Scottish folk awards.

As a solo performer, Karen has been involved in various projects of collaboration including the BBC series Transatlantic Sessions, where over the last decade she has filmed tracks with artists like James Taylor, Emmylou Harris, the McGarrigle Sisters, Nanci Griffith, and a host of Scottish musicians.

Tickets cost £16 and are available online at www.innerleithenmusicfestival.org, or from the Eastgate Theatre in Peebles, Scotlight in Innerleithen High Street and Merlin Music in Melrose. For more information, phone 01721 729949.
