GALALEANS were out in force to cheer home Braw Lad Lewis Playfair and Braw Lass Suzanne Henry following their visit to the Laird of Torwoodlee last night, writes Kenny Paterson.

And the popular fancy dress parade had townsfolk of all ages taking to the streets in various costumes, with hundreds of supporters cheering them on.

Wednesday’s busy evening followed Monday’s traditional visit to Lindean, right, when 130 riders made the short trip to the kirk to recognise the long church history linking Lindean and Galashiels.

Before returning to the town, riders took part in a series of competitive races on Gala Hill, with Katie Scott, last year’s Braw Lass, taking the Principals Race for the second year in a row. Her mum Sylvia claimed the Older Riders’ Race, while the Ex-Principals was claimed by Craig Wilson, 2007 Braw Lad.

Other winners were Sam Coltherd (Pony), Christine Chesser (Ladies) and Gary Beaumont (Gents).

Sunday saw the Kirking of the Braw Lad at Trinity Church and the schoolchildren’s sports were held at Netherdale.

Tonight sees the Braw Lads’ Gathering welcome its overseas guests to a civic reception, while Friday is the investiture reception, both in the Volunteer Hall.

And when the town War Memorial Clock strikes 8am on Saturday, Braw Lad Lewis will finally get his hands on the Burgh flag, before he and Braw Lass Suzanne lead the cavalcade on a round of commemorations and celebrations.
