Classic start to the season for Clef Club

Galashiels Clef Club opened its 2012/13 season on this month with a welcome from club president Margaret Lang to all returning and new members and visitors to the club.

The music was kicked off by Margaret Dick on piano, with two intermezzi by Brahms, with their lush cadences and complex chords.

Robert Fraser on violin and Miriam Scarlett on piano continued with Haydn’s Piano Trio No 5 in E-flat. Robert’s violin was complemented by Miriam’s expert handling of the very demanding accompaniment.

Jim Letham played three jazzy piano pieces by the late Brian Bonsor of Hawick. A CD of the much-missed former music teacher’s music will be on sale in November.

Heidi Goodship on flute and Jim Letham on piano played Handel’s Fitzwilliam Sonata No 3 in D minor, with its melodic interplay between the two instruments.

Finally, Robert Fraser took up his violin again for seven Scots fiddle tunes, including three written by accordionist Paul Chamberlain from Bowden. Robert’s foot-tapping performance completed an excellent and very varied evening’s music.

The Clef Club is looking for new members.  Anyone interested can contact Elizabeth Fraser on 01896 752375 or visit the website:  www.onlineborders.org.uk/community/galaclefclub
