Bryden kicks off Melrose Music Society’s Petrov piano celebrations
John Bryden will play Schubert in a recital at Melrose Music Society on Sunday.
MELROSE Music Society will celebrate its new Petrov piano with a performance by the town’s acclaimed international pianist John Bryden this Sunday.
It will be the first of three Franz Schubert recitals performed for the society.
Schubert was a prolific composer from Vienna who was only fully appreciated once he had died in 1828.
Oliver Eade of Melrose Music Society, said: “Schubert, who died aged only 31, left behind some of the most beautiful music the world has ever known. His prodigious output included more than 600 songs, a musical form of which he was supreme master, plus as many symphonies as his idol, Beethoven, and a large number of chamber and piano works.
“Much adored by his contemporary Viennese intellectual fraternity, he would frequently delight his friends by playing his piano music at ‘Schubertiads’.
“In Melrose, the audience will have the opportunity to relive this unique experience in a programme of ‘music and words’ that includes three of the composer’s finest sonatas: the beautifully lyrical Sonata in A major, D.664, the tragically darker Sonata in A minor, D.784, and the magnificent Sonata in G major, D.894.”
The latter has been described as ‘one of the rare completely serene sonatas’ written by Schubert and was a favourite of Sviatoslav Richter, widely regarded as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century.
The other recitals will given be on Sunday, March 24 and Sunday, April 14, all three held in the Melrose Parish Church Hall.
Sunday’s performance begins at 3pm and tickets are priced £10 and available on the door.
Accompanied children get in for free.
