Jimmy Millar of Melrose received an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List in 1995. He was nominated by Melrose and District Community Council for his unstinting work in the town. As well as having been community council chairman, he was, among other things, a founder member of Melrose Abbeyfield Society.

Just starting out on his service career, in the same year, was Stuart Bell. The 24-year-old, from Greenlaw, became the first King’s Own Scottish Borderer recruit to sign up with the regiment
after it began enlisting through the job centre, with many of the forces’ recruitment offices to be closed.

Stuart Bell of Greenlaw becomes first army recruit at Galashiels job centre issue around 7th Jan 1995.
