With Picking Nights taking place across the Borders, Nostalgia looks back at some proud days for previous principals.

The Peebles Beltane Festival Queen of 1988 was Sarah McGrath, aged 11, of Priorsford Primary School. She received a resounding welcome when her name was announced at the Drill Hall. Sarah’s chief maid was Michelle Johnston, a pupil at Kingsland Primary School.

Grant Rutherford was confirmed as Melrosian in May 1988, on the 50th anniversary of the selection of the very first Melrosian. He is flanked by supporters Eddie Weatherly (left) and Stewart Bunyan. Eddie was the previous year’s Melrosian.
