Emergency response is a Joint Effort

In October 1988, Colonel Stan Yates, Borders Region’s emergency services officer, oraginsed a simulated plane crash in central Galashiels. Exercise Joint Effort II was intended to demonstrate what might happen if an aircraft were to crash into a small electronics factory in the Borders, and to test the responses of emergency teams.

People in the area had been warned beforehand, and when the police arrived within a minute of the alarm being given, a crowd of several hundred had gathered to watch.
