Rescue workers searched for survivors amongst the wreckage of a crashed plane in the centre of Galashiels in October 1988.
This was a realistic exercise masterminded by the region’s emergency planning officer, Colonel Stan Yates. Wreckage of a plane was transported to the site of former Burns Engineering plant at Rosebank Mill off Roxburgh Street. The drill included fires, explosions and the threat of radiation.
Members of the local opera were amongst the “casualties” and St Margaret’s School became a mortuary. Chief Constable Sir William Sutherland was an observer.
