THURSDAYS until October 25: Trimontium Walk from Melrose past abbey to Newstead for a circuit of hidden Roman fortress of Trimontium. Followed by tea in village hall. Return to Melrose by the same route or by riverside (15 mins longer). Dogs welcome. All ages: children must be accompanied by adult. 1.30-5.15pm. Meet: Roman Heritage Centre, Market Square, Melrose. SATURDAY and SUNDAY: Kailzie Wildlife Festival showcasing many aspects of wildlife, the engironment and rural activities. Opened by Roy Dennis at Osprey and Nature Centre, Kailzie Estate, near Peebles, 10am, till 5pm Saturday, 4pm Sunday. Activities, displays, entertainment, retailers, food and drink Suitable for all ages, under-16s must be accompanied. £10 (£8, aged 5-15, £5).

SUNDAY: Nutshell Theatre: Allotment. Bowhill Walled Garden. Darkly comic multi-media show about life, death, pink fir apples and the secret power of worms for the over-8s, by Jules Horne, 1.30-4pm. £7.50, child £6. Under-16s must be accompanied. 01750 22204.
