Rankin backs Crook Inn battle
Top crime writer Ian Rankin is backing the battle to save the Crook Inn in Tweedsmuir.
Rankin, famous worldwide for his Inspector Rebus novels, is making a donation to the campaign, which needs to raise £160,000 by the end of December to purchase the oldest inn in Scotland.
Duncan Davidson, chairman of campaign organisers, the Tweedsmuir Community Company, welcomed Rankin’s support.
“It is very heartening that Mr Rankin, having looked at our proposals, has provided a financial pledge towards saving the Crook Inn.
“There are strong literary associations at the Crook with Robert Burns, James Hogg and John Buchan and we are keen to maintain the history.
“We have also had support In the last week from two MSPs recognising the importance of the Crook Inn to the local, rural economy and to tourism.
“Any additional contributions, large or small, to help to complete the purchase of the Crook Inn by the end of this year are welcome.
The Crook Inn was not a failed pub when it was closed and we believe that it can succeed as an innovative community-owned Crook Inn Hub.”
The campaign has now reached around £110,000, but has less than 50 days to raise the remainder.
Campaign brochures appealing for help went out to 30,000 homes this week (week beginning November 19), and organisers are hoping for a good response.
All donations are welcome, but any over £100 will be included on a ‘wall of thanks’ which will be erected at the inn once it is refurbished and open.
