The Blue Peter crew visited the Fans Farm, near Earlston, in January 1980 to make a feature for the BBC children’s programme on the use of motorbikes on a farm. Graham Stewart and his 11-year-old son Douglas, shown above with Blue Peter presenter Simon Groom, right, demonstrated how to use a motorbike to help herd cattle.

Prince Charles spent a day in the Borders in March of the same year. As well as meeting many Borderers, he opened a £2million extension to Exacta Circuits Ltd’s factory in Selkirk and a bottle bank in Galashiels, as well as visiting an animal breeding research centre at Blythbank and, above, a knitwear factory in Innerleithen.
