A Nelson Mandela Freedom March passed through the Borders in June 1988, gathering support from Borderers along the way. The 25 marchers – one for every year that Mandela had been imprisoned to that date – arrived in Galashiels on June 16. An anti-apartheid meeting was held in St Ninian’s church hall, where the marchers spent the night.
In the same month, Selkirk’s cricket XI beat Kelso to win the Border Knockout Cup at Shedden Park. Back row, from left – Gregor Robbie, Brian Hunter, Bobby Wilson, Kevin McGrath, Kenny Paterson and Ian Ballantyne. Front – Ronnie Dumma, Malcolm Lauder, Keith Anderson (captain), Malcolm Ford and Steven Wilson.
